In this Update:
Designating the Sergeant Vance Stephan Keslar Memorial BridgeIt was an honor to join family and friends of Sergeant Vance Stephan Keslar to officially designate a bridge in his honor. The bridge carrying Pennsylvania Route 869 over a tributary of the Little Conemaugh River in Adams Township, Cambria County, is now designated as the Sergeant Vance Stephan Keslar Memorial Bridge. On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, then Corporal Keslar defiantly led a charge to the ammunition department where he and the group were told they had no orders to release any weapons. Cpl. Keslar and others pushed aside the supply sergeant and grabbed old water-cooled machine guns from the depot. He climbed to the top of the building and began firing at Japanese forces. For these heroic actions during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Keslar was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star. For his selfless service to our nation, we honor him and extend our grateful and heartful thanks. Celebrating “The Star-Spangled Banner”Sunday, March 3, is National Anthem Day. “The Star-Spangled Banner” shares a message of endurance and perseverance. Francis Scott Key originally wrote his poem during a naval attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. That battle was nearly lost. It wasn’t until March 3, 1931, that President Herbert Hoover signed a law officially making “The Star-Spangled Banner” our country’s national anthem. Rather than commemorating victory, our national anthem highlights our ability to withstand attack. Today, we continue to raise our flag and refuse to be defeated.
