In this Update:
Championship Athletes Come Home to JohnstownI spoke on the Senate floor to recognize the recent accomplishments of athletes from across our region. On August 3, Bishop McCort’s Keegan Bassett won a gold medal in men’s freestyle wrestling for Team USA at the 2025 U17 World Championships. On August 9, Mainline Pharmacy won the 80th All-American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament championship. On August 10, the West Suburban 12U Softball Team, representing the Mid-Atlantic Region, took down the Central Region to bring home the 2025 Little League Softball World Series Championship Title. Congratulations to these tremendous athletes! Tonight, August 15, all three champions will be celebrated with a parade, ceremony, and fireworks in Johnstown. See the flyer below for more details. Senate Addresses Transportation Funding, Safety, AccountabilityI spoke in support of legislation that responsibly funds our transportation system across Pennsylvania and will help improve the safety, accountability, and stability of the commonwealth’s mass transit systems. As amended and approved by the Senate, House Bill 257 provides necessary additional funding in a way that protects taxpayers, improves safety on transit systems and implements new accountability measures. Importantly, the plan does this without impacting the General Fund, ensuring other critical programs aren’t threatened in the future. The plan also provides funding for roadway reconstruction, including for many roads the governor and PennDOT have overlooked. A Spending Plan to Fund Critical NeedsCounties, school districts, hospitals and others would receive critical funding from the commonwealth immediately under a bill approved by the Senate. As negotiations continue on a final 2025-26 state budget, Senate Bill 160 would provide funding at the levels included in the final 2024-25 budget. As negotiations continue on a final 2025-26 state budget, Senate Bill 160 would provide funding at the levels included in the final 2024-25 budget, allowing the state to immediately begin disbursing nearly $47.6 billion without the need for any new taxes. Many of the line items in the budget are not in dispute, so this is a responsible way to ensure that counties, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, social service providers and other entities receive immediate funding to meet their fiscal needs. Penn State Board of Trustees BreakfastI attended the Penn State University Board of Trustees breakfast at the Nittany Lion Inn. Ag Progress Days at Penn StateI had the pleasure of attending Penn State’s Ag Progress Days in Ferguson Township, Centre County, and taking part in the Government and Industry Luncheon. Centre County Grange FairIt was an honor to attend the coronation of the new Fair Queen, Gracie Novosel, at the Centre County Grange Fair.
