In this Update:
Statement Regarding the Vote to Close Penn State DuBoisThe Penn State University Board of Trustees met on Thursday and voted to begin the process of closing 7 Commonwealth Campuses, including Penn State DuBois. I am deeply dismayed that all of the advocacy and education of the significant benefit of Penn State DuBois have fallen on deaf ears. For multiple years, this institution embraced the mantra and model of Penn State and produced students who contribute to the local workforce, drive economic activity, and make our region and Commonwealth stronger. That relationship has been broken. I am committed to working with my colleagues in the House to identify an entity that appreciates our rural area and will take the broken baton to repair and strengthen our community. Our resilience, dedication and strong work ethic will win in the long run. We will meet the challenges in the face of change. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Luray Avenue Park in Richland TownshipI attended a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the new and improved Luray Avenue Park in Richland Township. I was happy to secure funding to make this project a reality. Upcoming Free License Plate Replacement EventsI will be hosting a series of free license plate replacement events across the 35th Senatorial District next month! Anyone with a damaged license plate is invited to stop by to start the process to receive a replacement plate for free. License plates are considered damaged if they feature a loss of reflectivity, peeling, blistering, or discoloration, and are unreadable from 50 feet away. Police will be present at the events to determine if plates need to be replaced and to help with any necessary paperwork. Once an application is submitted to PennDOT, a replacement plate with the same design and a new number will arrive by mail to the vehicle owner’s home address. PennDOT only allows an individual to keep the same registration number if the original plate was personalized or if the individual pays an extra fee. The dates, times, and locations of the plate replacement events are as follows: June 4, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. June 11, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. June 12, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. June 17, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Upcoming Senior Expo in DuBoisMark your calendar for my upcoming Senior Expo at the DuBois Mall next month! Senate Votes to Improve Communication About School Safety IssuesTo empower parents and increase transparency, the Senate passed legislation to improve reporting requirements about potentially dangerous situations at schools. Senate Bill 246 would require parental and employee notification when there is a weapon on any school property that violates its weapons policy, as well as when there are cases of harassment and bullying. It would apply to public, non-public and private schools. Current law does not require school districts to inform parents about incidents when a weapon is brought onto school grounds or to related activities. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration. Grants Available for Firefighting Equipment and TrainingThe Office of the State Fire Commissioner has two grant programs that are accepting applications through May 29. Both programs distribute grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. Applications should be submitted online. The Emergency Training Center Capital Grant Program awards funds that can be used to establish or modernize facilities, acquire or renovate structures and repair or purchase equipment. Emergency service training centers, community colleges, county-owned facilities, municipal or fire department-owned facilities and nonprofit, countywide associations are eligible. The Municipal Fire Department Capital Grant Program awards money to municipal fire departments to improve structures and firefighting equipment in the commonwealth. PA Offers Free Motorcycle TrainingMay is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a great time to sign up for a motorcycle safety course whether you’re a novice or experienced rider. Classes are free for Pennsylvanians who have a motorcycle learner’s permit or motorcycle license. Successful completion of a basic or intermediate course offered by the state waives the requirement to take a skills test at a PennDOT driver license center and automatically earns the permit holder their motorcycle license. Class schedules are coordinated by third-party training providers at locations across the commonwealth and posted online at least four weeks before the class begins. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” – Unknown To all the men and women who selflessly gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms we hold dear, thank you. To the families who are missing a loved one from their lives, please know that loss was not in vain. We remember, and we appreciate the sacrifice. |
