Recognition of My Parents’ 50th Wedding Anniversary

It was a tremendous honor to wish my parents a happy 50th wedding anniversary on the Senate floor this week.

Meetings with Visitors to the Capitol

I had the pleasure of meeting with a number of visitors to the Capitol Building in Harrisburg this week:

  • Tammy Dunn and Roxanne Altermus, nurse practitioners from Cambria County
  • Tracy Sepich, O.D., from Centre County, and Jessica Young, O.D., president of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association
  • Kimberly Saltsman, director of the Mount Nittany Health Children’s Advocacy Center of Centre County, and Mary Tatum, director of the Child Advocacy Center of Clearfield County
  • Student members of the Tobacco Resistance Unit from Portage Area School District
  • Sheriff Don Robertson and Chief Deputy William Goins from the Cambria County Sherrif’s Office

Resolution Designated Correctional Officers and Employees Week

I spoke on my resolution to designate May 4th through May 10th, as Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Pennsylvania.

Each day, correctional officers and employees serve with dedication and courage in our state prisons, county jails, and community corrections facilities. Their work is critical to maintaining public safety, upholding the rule of law, and supporting offender rehabilitation and reentry.

Correctional officers and staff perform their duties under challenging conditions, often without public recognition. This week is an opportunity to express our respect and appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

Nurses Recognized During National Nurses Week

This week is National Nurses Week. Thank you to all the nurses in Pennsylvania who work tirelessly to keep our communities healthy. You can find my message to nurses across the Commonwealth here.

Reproduction of the First American Bible

I had the honor of being presented with a reproduction of the First American Bible. Known as the “Aitken Bible,” it was first printed and published in Pennsylvania in 1782 by Robert Aitken and was the first Bible endorsed by Congress for printing in the United States.

New Clearfield District Office Location

My district office in Clearfield has moved to a new location. While the address has changed, the phone and fax numbers remain the same. If you’re a Clearfield County resident and you need assistance with any state-related issue, stop by my new Clearfield office at the address above or call (814) 765-0555.

Upcoming Free License Plate Replacement Events

I will be hosting a series of free license plate replacement events across the 35th Senatorial District next month! Anyone with a damaged license plate is invited to stop by to start the process to receive a replacement plate for free. License plates are considered damaged if they feature a loss of reflectivity, peeling, blistering, or discoloration, and are unreadable from 50 feet away. Police will be present at the events to determine if plates need to be replaced and to help with any necessary paperwork.

Once an application is submitted to PennDOT, a replacement plate with the same design and a new number will arrive by mail to the vehicle owner’s home address. PennDOT only allows an individual to keep the same registration number if the original plate was personalized or if the individual pays an extra fee.

The dates, times, and locations of the plate replacement events are as follows:

June 4, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Clearfield Fair Grounds
5615 Park Street, Clearfield

June 11, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Cambria Heights Elementary School
138 E. Campbell Street, Carrolltown

June 12, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Greater Johnstown High School
222 Central Avenue, Johnstown

June 17, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Blue Course Church
1243 Blue Course Drive, State College

Upcoming Senior Expo in DuBois

Mark your calendar for my upcoming Senior Expo at the DuBois Mall next month! State Representative Mike Armanini and I are hosting a free Senior Expo featuring door prizes, health screenings, and exhibitors from government agencies and senior citizen organzations. The expo will take place on Thursday, June 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the DuBois Mall, 5522 Shaffer Road, DuBois, PA 15801.

Senate Votes for the Save Women’s Sports Act

With a bipartisan vote, the Senate passed legislation to protect athletic opportunity, competitive fairness and safety for female athletes across Pennsylvania. The Save Women’s Sports Act would ensure athletic teams designated for girls and women are reserved for biological females in K-12 and collegiate sports across the commonwealth.

I spoke on the floor in support of Senate Bill 9, which would reinforce the original intent of Title IX by ensuring female athletes are not denied scholarships, placements or opportunities due to unfair competition from biological males.

It is now headed to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Bill Strengthening PA’s Sexual Offender Registry Approved by Senate

The Senate unanimously approved legislation this week to better protect children in Pennsylvania against sexual predators. Senate Bill 255 would require an individual who is convicted of the offense of sexual assault by sports official, volunteer or employee of a nonprofit association to register as a sexual offender under the Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

Under current law, a conviction for this offense does not require registration as a sex offender. Closing this loophole will strengthen SORNA and ensure potentially violent sex offenders can be properly monitored.

The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.

PA Treasury Continues Working to Return Money to the People

PA Money Match is a new law that allows the Pennsylvania Treasury to automatically return certain unclaimed property. The program includes properties valued at $500 or less that belong to a single owner. If you have eligible properties, you will receive a letter in the mail to confirm your address. About 45 days later, you will receive a check for your property.

Unclaimed properties include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, rebates and insurance payments. The average claim is worth more than $1,000. Because PA Money Match will not automatically return properties exceeding $500 or those that may have more than one owner, you are still encouraged to regularly use the PA Treasury’s website to check if you have unclaimed property.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures who love and care for us throughout our lives.
