
JOHNSTOWN – Sen. Wayne Langerholc, Jr. (R-35) will host a bridge dedication ceremony honoring Private First Class (PFC) Dr. Alex W. Barber on Thursday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at Greater Johnstown Senior High School, 222 Central Avenue, Johnstown.
A graduate of Johnstown High School, PFC Barber enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served in World War II. While administering care to his fellow soldiers, he was wounded in action. For his heroic actions, PFC Barber was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war, he returned home and became a chiropractor. PFC Barber passed away on October 14, 1986, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
To honor the life, service and sacrifice of PFC Barber, the bridge carrying Pennsylvania Route 56 over Stony Creek River in Johnstown will be named the PFC Dr. Alex W. Barber Memorial Bridge.
